The Corn Snake: Appearance, biology, life cycle, habitat, diet, behavior
Corn snakes are found mainly in the southeastern regions of the United States of America. They typically prefer areas where there is ample supply of food for them. As they are not venomous, it is not unusual to see people keep corn snakes as pets.
Appearance and Biology
Fully-grown corn snakes can reach anything between 2 and 6 feet in length. They have slender bodies and are typically dark yellow, brownish-yellow or orange in color. This is in addition to red spots and stripes at the back and on the sides too. The underside is usually with white and black markings. The appearance can also differ in terms of color and pattern depending on factors such as location or age. They belong to the genus Pantherophis and their exact species name is Pantherophis guttatus.
Life Cycle
The eggs of corn snakes need an average of two months to reach the hatching stage. Corn snakes typically do not take care of their eggs. Upon hatching, the hatchlings measure about 12 inches on average and become adults in approximately 18 to 36 months.
Habitat
The eastern portions of the United States are considered the native habitat of the corn snake. They prefer hilly areas, farm barns, old uninhabited buildings, meadows, forested groves amongst others. A number of islands like the Bahamas in the Caribbean also serve as homes for the corn snake.
Diet
Corn snakes are constrictors by nature and that means they grip their prey like rodents, lizards, and amphibians with force then swiftly coil their bodies around the prey. The squeezing does not stop until the prey has been totally incapacitated. Then the corn snake proceeds to swallow the prey whole, often starting from the head.
Behavior
Corn snakes make use of odor signals mainly when it comes to hunting and detecting prey. For defense, some corn snake species make use of tail vibration where the snake vibrates the tail very quickly to deter a predator.
